BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The Electric Avenue bridge is partially re-opening on Tuesday, June 11, just over a week after it closed to all vehicle traffic.

The City of Bellingham says the bridge will be open to one lane of alternating traffic controlled by temporary traffic signals. The partial re-opening includes a weight restriction of 24 tons for the bridge, which will limit traffic to one large vehicle at a time.

Pedestrian access will remain open on the east side sidewalk and bicycles will share the traffic lane. Drivers should expect delays on the bridge and are advised to consider alternate routes, walking, biking or carpooling to minimize congestion.

The bridge was closed on June 3 after a routine inspection revealed “critical” structural issues.

The city says planning and funding efforts are underway for a full bridge reconstruction project.
