PARIS, FR (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The Paris Olympics have come to a close and local athletes certainly made their mark.
Bellingham native and Sehome High School alumnus Jonas Ecker helped make Olympic history for the United States.
Ecker and his teammate Aaron Small finished fourth in the kayak doubles 500-meter semifinal on Friday to qualify them for the medal round. Despite finishing eighth, the duo became the first U.S. kayakers to qualify for an Olympic final in 24 years.
Overall, King5 reports that athletes from western Washington helped the United States earn five of their 40 gold medals. Representatives from around the area also pitched in for six silver and 13 bronze.
Vancouver, WA gymnast Jordan Chiles would have added another bronze, but her third-place finish in the floor exercise final was recently overturned by the International Gymnastics Federation. The U.S. Olympic Committee appealed the decision, saying that Chiles’ coach Cecil Landi submitted an inquiry into her score within the one-minute window after the score was posted. The federation rejected the appeal on Monday, Aug. 11 according to the USA Gymnastics’ account on X, formerly Twitter. The statement USA Gymnastics released says that they plan to continue to appeal the ruling, including going to the Swiss Federal Tribunal.
