OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Washington’s longtime governor is saying goodbye.
Outgoing Governor Jay Inslee made his final State of the State address in Olympia on Tuesday morning.
He touted his work to institute the state’s cap and invest program, capital gains tax, assault weapons ban, college financial aid programs and more.
Inslee went on to push back against Governor-elect Bob Ferguson’s plans for a 6% spending cut in the face of a $12 billion budget deficit.
“My budget in December proposed $2 billion in budget cuts, but pruning significantly more than that, I would consider a slide back,” Inslee said. ” We have a strong economy, so why would we consider cuts to programs like housing or mental and behavioral health services at a time like this?”
Instead, Inslee promoted his proposal for a 1% tax on the state’s richest residents.
“More than 64% of our state said we’re keeping our capital gains tax on extraordinary profits. My budget honors that principle by asking those who have benefitted the most from Washington’s booming economy to play more of a role in protecting behavioral health, early learning and education,” Inslee said. “Deep budget cuts always – always – fall hardest on the people who cannot afford them.”
The outgoing governor also took a shot at the incoming Trump administration.
“Our state will work with anyone on policies that are positive for Washington,” Inslee said. “But we will not bend the knee to a would-be authoritarian’s worst impulses.”
Inslee’s 12-year tenure as the longest-serving current governor in the United States will come to an end on Wednesday, Jan. 15, when Governor-elect Ferguson is sworn in.
