OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Washington’s incoming governor has announced a plan to cut into the state’s projected budget deficit.
Governor-elect Bob Ferguson told reporters in Olympia on Jan. 9 that he’s calling for a 6% spending cut across nearly all state agencies. He added that the cuts will not affect education or public safety.
Outgoing Governor Jay Inslee announced a hiring and spending freeze in December in light of a critical shortfall in the state’s operating budget.
According to the Washington State Office of Financial Management, economists are forecasting a $10 to $12 billion budget deficit over the next four years. Ferguson estimates his spending cuts will save roughly $4 billion but says this is just the first step in addressing the deficit.
He is set to be sworn in on Jan. 15, two days after the 2025 legislative session begins.
