WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County is applying for funding from the United States Department of Agriculture to perform home repairs in rural areas of Whatcom County.
If awarded, the Home Preservation Grant would help Habitat make repairs affordable for low-income homeowners by helping offset the cost of labor and materials. Volunteer labor and in-kind services and materials also help to keep Habitat projects affordable.
Habitat Whatcom offers affordable loans – keeping total housing costs to around 30% – and a 0% interest loan for qualifying homeowners. This program anticipates that the HPG grant funds will assist 15-20 rural Whatcom County residents. This estimate assumes an average project cost of about $5,000/home.
USDA defines all areas within Whatcom, but outside of the City of Bellingham to be considered rural – or having a maximum population of 20,000.
