WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com,AP) – Health officials say that there’s no evidence bird flu is spreading between people after more infections were reported across Washington state.

The Washington State Department of Agriculture says that cases among animals were confirmed over the past week in Kitsap and Lewis Counties.

The H5N1 bird flu has been spreading widely in the U.S. among wild birds, poultry, cows and a number of other animals. My Bellingham Now previously reported the most recent of the 31 confirmed human cases are two workers at a commercial egg farm in Franklin County.

The rest are in California, Colorado, Michigan, Texas and Missouri.

In most human cases, farmworkers were in contact with infected birds. But the case of one Missouri person notes that they did not work at a farm and had no known contact with an infected animal.

Back in Washington, Whatcom County Health and Community Services says that people across the state should take precautions when it comes to their backyard flocks.

Poultry owners should avoid contact with wild birds, avoid mixing species, and monitor their flocks for sudden signs of illness.
