WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Amid the holiday craze it is important to prioritize the health of yourself and your loved ones, so no one is left out of the season’s festivities.

Here are some personal wellness tips and reminders from The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) and the team at My Bellingham Now:

Care for your immune system

Be careful around infants and elderly folks if you feel under the weather. Wash your hands before touching your eyes, mouth and nose. Staying up to date on immunizations is key, especially as flu season kicks into gear.

If you feel sick give yourself and those around you the gift of staying home or find ways to socially distance yourself from others.

If you or someone you know has come down with COVID-19 and is alone during the holidays, Care Connect Washington has a program that will provide food or other support during isolation.

Eat and be merry

Sharing food with those around you is a highlight of the holiday season for many people, but it’s important to remember to do so safely. The DOH provides holiday food safety reminders to help the spread of cross-contamination and harmful bacteria.

Take precautions against frightful weather

As cold and rainy weather rolls in be sure to keep warm by wearing ample layers. The DOH advises people to have gloves, hats, scarves and warm boots on hand. Don’t forget to keep your pets safely inside as temperatures drop.

The DOH also reminds us that winter is when housefires often happen. Whether a fire is caused by cooking, space heaters, wood stoves or a cozy fireplace, be sure to protect your home and have the proper emergency equipment on hand.

Be kind to yourself

Finally, don’t forget to go easy on yourself. For many, the holidays can be stressful, overwhelming or full of pressure. Be mindful of your emotional and physical well-being. If you’re seeking social connection during the holidays, consider attending one of the many events happening in Whatcom County.

If you can, get outside and connect with nature. Physical activity in the great outdoors is a simple way to reduce anxiety and stress. Give yourself a hug or reach out to a loved one if you’re feeling lonely and in need of comfort.

If you or anyone you know are struggling with mental health during the holidays, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
