JEFFERSON COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A pair of would-be burglars were busted in Jefferson County after attempting to escape on a rowboat.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says that a homeowner caught the duo stealing valuable items from a storage container on their property on the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 10.

Over $11,000 in gold and jewelry were taken before the duo tried to leave in a car with covered license plates. The homeowner was able to smash their windshield with a piece of wood before the burglars sped off.

Their car was found rolled over near the Hood Canal Bridge a short time later, but the suspects had already run away.

Deputies used a drone to find the two attempting to escape once more in a stolen rowboat, using plywood as an oar.

But their last-ditch effort was waterlogged after their watercraft took on water and they were forced to jump ship.

The man and woman were taken into custody once they returned to shore.
