SEATTLE, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A King County man accused of carrying an explosive that shut down part of I-90 appeared in federal court on Tuesday.
U.S. Attorney Tessa Gorman says 42-year-old Sokphana Soeung is charged with unlawful possession of a destructive device.
According to the criminal complaint, Soeung led police on a slow speed chase on Oct. 12 that continued onto I-90 at Mercer Island.
A Washington State Patrol trooper had stopped the car when Soeung jumped out of it with a tennis ball and a lighter in his hands. Police tackled Soeung and forced him to drop the ball, which was later found to be filled with explosive powder and a fuse.
Law enforcement also found a second explosive device in the car that was made with sparklers that were taped together.
The investigation shut down I-90 for a lengthy period while the bomb squad determined there was no danger to the public or the I-90 bridge.
If he’s found guilty, Soeung could spend up to 10 years in prison.
