OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Lawmakers are moving forward with a pair of bills that would crack down on reckless drivers and littering.
The state Senate voted overwhelmingly to pass HB 1596 on Tuesday.
If signed into law, drivers with suspended licenses due to reckless driving or excessive speeding would have to install a device that restricts their car speed to the posted limit. Drivers with the device could only be allowed to exceed the speed limit three times a month.
The cost of littering in Washington could also rise for the first time in over three decades after the Senate approved HB 1293. The bill would increase the fine for littering up to $125 per cubic foot of trash, with an additional $93 penalty if it happens on a state highway.
Rep. Mark Klicker of Walla Walla sponsored the bill and claims residents dumped nearly 38 million pounds of trash in 2022, which is significantly higher than the national average.
Both bills now return to the House for votes on the amended versions before heading to the governor’s desk.
