WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Though the weather has been a bit dreary as of late, this weekend is looking brisk but bright.
If you’re a fan of stand-up comedy, you’re in luck, because there are a couple of great comics in town this weekend. First up, Andrew Sleighter will perform at the Blue Room on Friday, Jan. 17. Sleighter is a Western grad, and he has performed on Conan, The Late Late Show with James Corden and on Comedy Central. The show starts at 7 p.m. Go to blueroombham.com for tickets.
If you like your comedy “clean and clever,” you don’t want to miss Milt Abel at the Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club. Abel will headline comedy night on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Great Blue Heron Grill.
You can reserve at table here and enjoy an evening of delicious food and great comedy. The show starts at 7 p.m.
For those of us itching to get outside there are some great outdoor opportunities in the coming days.
On Saturday, Jan. 18, there are two options where attendees can really get their hands dirty. In Maple Falls, Northwest Natura is presenting the first part of its three-day Winter Naturalist Series from 11:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The classes require advanced registration and will teach about medicinal or edible plants, ecological awareness, wildlife tracking, ethnobotany, winter preparedness and more.
If you’re on the hunt for something more affordable a tree-potting work party will take place from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association Nursery. Interested volunteers are asked to register through the Whatcom Million Trees Project’s website but the event is free to attend.
In the mood for something indoors but still entertaining? There are live theatre and music performances happening through the weekend.
The Upfront Theatre is presenting one of several showings of “Punch Line,” a fast-paced improv show where the script utilizes audience members’ imaginations. Punch Line promises to provide “a roller coaster of laughs” and is a great event to attend solo or in a group. It takes place from 9:30 to 11 p.m. and tickets can be purchased online through the theatre’s website.
Another—slightly unconventional—show is taking the form of a wedding planning event at the Mount Baker Theatre (MBT) on Jan. 19 at 11 a.m. The MBT Winter Wedding Show will showcase over 30 vendors locally and beyond for individuals looking to tie the knot or simply explore the theatre. Attendees are invited to sample catering and desserts, connect with photographers or discover something entirely new. You can register online through the MBT’s website, and the first 150 who arrive are guaranteed a goodie bag upon entry.
Looking for something a little more lowkey? Try attending one of two jazz nights on Saturday or Sunday. On Jan. 18 “Between Two Worlds” will entail a classical and jazz music crossover at the Jansen Art Center in Lynden at 7 p.m. The BJ Block trio is joining rioT to bring the audience a form of music that “celebrates our similarities and our differences.” Registration is required for those interested in attending.
Boundary Bay Brewing is also hosting a free jazz night on Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. The weekly Sunday jazz night is also referred to as a jazz jam, where interested musicians are invited to join in. The event is 21+ as their taproom is age restricted.
If you are looking for something festive to do, the Bellinghome School of Music is hosting their annual Winter Recital this weekend. On Friday and Saturday, young music students will showcase their skills on stage. The recital runs Friday from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Firehouse Arts and Events Center in Fairhaven.
There will be even more young local talent on display at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19 at Village Books in Fairhaven. A couple of high school students, Cody and Taylor Watts, have compiled their journal entries from when they were in middle school and created The Deck: Stories from the Pandemic. The book chronicles their struggles living through one of the most challenging years in modern American history.
So, head down to Village Books for this author event and book signing or, better yet, follow the Watts brothers at thedeckbook.com.
This week’s featured live show is “The Rumba Kings” who are playing on Friday, Jan. 17 at the MBT. The Rumba Kings are a Seattle-based band with a diverse musical style, featuring Spanish and Mediterranean influences. They are known to “enchant audiences” with their romantic music.
The concert will begin at 7:30 and tickets can be purchased online through the theatre’s website.
