WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – February is in full swing in Whatcom County and there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate Valentine’s Day and Black History Month this weekend. From live music to dancing to a celebration of Bellingham nightlife, we have you covered in this week’s Lifestyle Lookout.
On Saturday, Feb. 15, Aslan Brewing is celebrating the 7th anniversary of its second location in downtown Bellingham, Aslan Depot. It is a free event featuring beer specials, wine, craft cocktails, a tattoo artist and live music from Bellingham-based band Cuttlefish.
Aslan Depot’s 7th Anniversary party kicks off at noon and the live music starts at 7 p.m. So, head down to their location at 1322 N. State Street to celebrate community and craft beer. Go to aslanbrewing.com for all the details.
February is Black History Month and the Firehouse Arts and Events Center in Fairhaven is hosting a viewing of Breaking Boundaries on Saturday. Breaking Boundaries is a documentary film about Nastasya Generalova, a Black gymnast from California. The film chronicles her journey as the only Black girl on Team USA and her relationship with her mother during the lead-up to the Tokyo Olympics.
Breaking Boundaries is part of the Cascadia International Women’s Film Festival. Tickets are $12 and the show starts at 7 p.m. The Firehouse Arts and Events Center is located at 1314 Harris Ave.
This is a great opportunity to support the Firehouse Center after they were the victim of a recent overnight burglary. Last weekend, thieves broke in and stole around $500, causing an estimated$9,000 in damage to their facility.
If you are looking for something active and indoors to do on Sunday, Feb. 16, look no further than the Bellingham Salsa Collective. Every Sunday at 5:30 p.m. they host Salsa lessons at The Majestic at 1027 N. Forest St. It starts with a 30-minute foundations class for beginners followed by an hour for level 1 and level 2 dancers. Then from 7 to 8 p.m., they open the floor up for everyone to dance the night away.
The Salsa Collective suggests a $10 donation but if that does not fit your budget you can participate for free. Go to the Bellingham Salsa Collective’s Facebook page for all the details.
If you are looking for something special to do for Valentine’s Day, the Mount Baker Theatre has you covered. Devotchka is bringing their unique brand of indie rock to Bellingham on Friday, Feb. 14 at 7:30 p.m. The Colorado-based band plays music inspired by cabaret, norteño, punk and the dance music of Eastern Europe.
Tickets for Devotchka start at $34. For all the details go to mountbakertheatre.com.
