BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Looking for something to do this weekend in Whatcom County? Look no further as the MBN staff has you covered.
There’s a great charity event happening on Friday, March 22 at the Bellingham Yacht Club. It’s the Skookum Kids Charity Poker Tournament, the largest and most friendly card game in town and all of the proceeds go to Skookum Kids, an organization that licenses foster parents, places kids in loving homes, cares for kids at emergency shelters and works to make sure kids are safe. Just remember what Kenny Rogers says in “The Gambler“…
This is a no limit Texas Hold ‘Em tournament with a $125 buy-in. You can also buy a VIP ticket for $175 that gets you 50 percent more starting chips. Starting off with more chips is a big advantage to many. Either way, your ticket comes with a drink ticket and a T-shirt. Plus, the top three finishers win a prize pack. The Skookum Kids Charity Poker Tournament kicks off Friday night at 6:00 p.m. down at the Bellingham Yacht Club. Go to the events page at skookumkids.org to register. Also, if you didn’t know, the word “Skookum” means strong, impressive or brave.
Something you may want to check out is Charting the World: A Journey Through Old and New Maps at the Cordata Gallery. There’s an opening reception on Saturday from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and the exhibit runs through May 18. The show explores the history and diverse forms of maps while exploring their enduring significance in shaping how we understand the world. The gallery is located at 465 West Stuart Road and if you type that into Google Maps, you’ll see it’s just past Whatcom Community College on the right. We think it looks like a great exhibit and it’s totally free. Go to cordatagallery.com for all the details.
If you want to enjoy some live music this weekend, you are definitely in the right spot this weekend.
Warp Detour is coming to the Wild Buffalo on Saturday night. They pretty much cover it all; NOFX, Rancid, Bad Religion, Descendents, Pennywise and Less Than Jake just to name a few. For the younger crowd, they’ll be joined by emo tribute band “I Scream Social” who covers bands like Taking Back Sunday, Fall Out Boy and even My Chemical Romance. Opening the night are local band Boxcutter. The show starts at 9:00 p.m. and tickets are available at wildbuffalo.net.
On State St., The Shakedown is hosting a tribute night to Blondie, Green Day and Paramore. Feel free to throw your Vans on and get down with some moshing or slam dancing, or whatever it is the kids do these days. This show is at 9:00 p.m. on Friday and tickets are available at shakedownbellingham.com.
