BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A Whatcom County couple is in custody after police say they scammed two local residents out of thousands of dollars.
Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Deb Slater says deputies began investigating the incidents in April.
The first suspect, identified as 23-year-old Jonathen Faircloth, called someone in March pretending to be the fraud department at a local credit union, according to court documents. Faircloth received the victim’s login information over text and used it to transfer $3,700 from their account into his.
Two days later, Faircloth texted another victim using the same scheme and transferred nearly $10,000 into his fiancé’s bank account.
Bellingham Police arrested Faircloth on June 2 for his connection to the fraud case and other separate theft charges. His fiancé was arrested on Sunday after she visited him at the Whatcom County Jail.
The credit union reimbursed both victims for the money that was taken from them.
