WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A date has been set for increased fees for passengers on the Lummi Island Ferry.

Whatcom County Executive Satpal Sidhu signed an executive order on Wednesday, June 18 that will put the new rates into effect on August 23.

The fate of the ferry rates has been in limbo for several years.

My Bellingham Now previously reported that a Lummi Island resident successfully argued that a proposed rate hike in 2024 had been miscalculated.

But at recent County Council meetings, representatives for Public Works said that funding for the ferry system has been in peril due to a lack of fare increases.

Whatcom County’s Code dictates that the ferry system has to use just over half of its total fare funds to cover operational costs.
