LYNDEN, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Lynden is divided over its stance on whether to keep putting fluoride in its drinking water.
The Lynden City Council voted 4-3 in June to approve an ordinance that would remove fluoride from the town’s drinking water supply. But Mayor Scott Korthuis vetoed the ordinance in the city council meeting on Monday, July 1.
Korthuis cited public comments during past meetings, where 51 of the 95 attendees spoke in favor of keeping fluoride.
Lynden has been adding fluoride to its water system since 1959 as the only city in Whatcom County to do so. Proponents of fluoridation say it reduces tooth decay and is a cost-effective way to help those who don’t have regular access to dental care.
Critics argue fluoride is a medical treatment being forced on residents by the city when it should instead be a decision made by each individual household.
It would now take a 5-2 vote by the council to override Mayor Korthuis’ veto.
He says that vote will likely take place at their next meeting on Monday, July 15.
