LYNDEN, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Lynden School District has taken action following a recent controversy left trans athletes in girls’ sports under public scrutiny.
Superintendent David VanderYacht with a Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) representative drafted two letters that were approved with amendments Thursday, Sept. 5 during the school board meeting.
VanderYacht says the letters are intended to ask for guidance in transgender students’ role in sports.
“I think we are finding across the state that there is a shared concern for transgender athletes and a concern for integrity of girls sports,” he said during the meeting. “There’s good people working to try to find a resolution in a very complicated topic and not just high school sports, right? It’s every level of sports.”
Parents in the community urged the board to take action at the end of last school year when Washington saw its first transgender athlete win a state title in girls’ track.
The two letters – addressed to lawmakers and the WIAA – were amended to remove a section from both letters that ask for education on transgender issues. Board members agreed that the section was not necessary for the purposes of the letters.
