BREMERTON, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A light earthquake was felt across much of the central Puget Sound region Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 29.

The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network reports the magnitude 4.2 quake struck at 2:06 p.m.

The epicenter was located about 12 miles south-southwest of Bremerton at a depth of about 17 miles.

Residents reported feeling the shaking across a broad area stretching from Olympia north to Marysville. Most reports described the shaking as weak to light.

Within hours of the event, more than 5,100 people had submitted “Did You Feel It?” reports to the U.S. Geological Survey, indicating the quake was widely felt despite its relatively modest magnitude.

The ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System automatically detected the earthquake but determined it was too small to trigger public alerts through cell phones.

The U.S. Geological Survey’s aftershock forecast indicates a 38% chance of at least one magnitude 3.0 or greater aftershock during the next week, along with an 8% chance of another magnitude 4.0 or larger quake.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
