OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A Nigerian man accused of scamming millions of dollars from western Washington residents has been arrested.

The 40-year-old man was taken into custody when he arrived at a Texas airport, nearly a year after he was indicted for 14 counts of wire fraud in connection to his alleged scheme.

The indictment states that he met his victims on dating websites such as Match, Zoosk and Christian Cafe under the name “Giovanni.”

Prosecutors say he defrauded victims of more than $3.3 million by telling them he was deployed overseas in the military and inventing many different reasons to ask them for money.

U.S. Attorney Tessa Gorman applauded the investigators who caught him, saying defendants in romance scams like this are usually overseas and unreachable by law enforcement.

The man is now being transported to the Western District of Washington for arraignment. If he’s found guilty, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
