MOUNT BAKER, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The Mount Baker Ski Area is hosting the 36th Legendary Banked Slalom this weekend.

The epic snowboard race runs all day starting with qualifiers on Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8. The top racers will then compete in the finals on Sunday, Feb. 9.

Held annually since 1985, past winners of the snowboarding race have included some of the biggest names in the sport. Terje Haakonsen, Maëlle Ricker and Xavier de Le Rue have all hoisted trophies over the years. The event started out with 16 racers and now welcomes over 400 riders to Mount Baker from countries like Australia, France and Sweden, along with competitors from right here in Whatcom County.

If you are heading up to the mountain this weekend and want to watch the race, you will not be able to watch from the ski area. Spectators will have to gear up, grab a lift ticket, and head up to the top of Chair 5 or 8 to reach the course.

There will also be a baked salmon BBQ with a beer garden at the Raven Hut Lodge this Saturday from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
