MOUNT VERNON, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A man is in custody after allegedly attempting to set a Mount Vernon home on fire.
Police say that officers initially responded to a possible court order violation at the apartment around noon on Sunday, Feb. 18.
They returned to the same address several hours later after the suspect began throwing things in the hallway.
The suspect pulled out a knife and threatened to harm himself when officers told him he was under arrest.
He retreated back into the apartment, created a barricade, and began a small fire, all while throwing more items from the unit at officers.
A Crisis Negotiator from the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office was eventually able to get the suspect to surrender.
Some officers were treated for smoke inhalation, but no major injuries were reported.
The suspect, identified only as a 39-year-old man, remains in custody at the Skagit County Jail.
