MOUNT VERNON, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Mount Vernon Police are looking for a teenager from Bellingham suspected of fleeing in a stolen car.

The Mount Vernon Police Department says an officer pulled a driver over at around 2 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, because their car didn’t have a rear license plate.

The driver did not have a license on him and gave officers a false name. The officer asked for the driver to turn the car off, but the driver proceeded to back into a patrol car and flee the scene.

Police did not pursue the driver for fear of public safety since he was traveling at a high rate of speed without headlights on, but their ensuing investigation identified him as a 17-year-old from Bellingham.

Bellingham Police helped investigators later determine that the car was stolen.

Mount Vernon Police Lt. Dave Shackleton says the department has an active warrant for the teen’s arrest.
