Mariners News

The Mariners are kicking off their final homestand of the season tonight.

They’re hosting their rival Houston Astros in the first of a brief, two-game series.

The M’s are still clinging onto a razor-thin chance of making the playoffs, sitting five games behind the first-place Texas Rangers with just six to go. A loss tonight paired with a Texas win would officially eliminate them from the playoff race.

Meanwhile, the Astros are also sputtering to the finish line. They sit just a game behind Texas for first place in the AL West, but are coming off a sweep to the Braves and have dropped six of their last eight.

Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez is still making a run at the AL Triple Crown, as he currently sits one home run and nine RBI away from pulling off the historic feat.

Logan Gilbert is on the mound tonight as the M’s face playoff elimination. Coverage begins at 5:30 and first pitch is at 6:40 on KPUG.

On the bright side for Mariners fans, a pair of the team’s top prospects earned some major honors this year.

22-year-old rookie Kade Anderson was named the Texas League Pitcher of the Year yesterday after his historic season with Double-A Arkansas.

Anderson went 10-1 with a 1.06 ERA and 135 strikeouts to just 13 walks. He only gave up 11 earned runs across 93 and one-thirds innings.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old switch-hitting shortstop Felnin Celesten was named Northwest League MVP.

Celesten hit .314 with 13 homers and 18 stolen bases in 80 games with High-A Everett AquaSox. He was eventually promoted to Double-A Arkansas in late July.

Celesten is ranked by MLB Pipeline as the No. 4 prospect in the Mariners’ farm system and a top 50 prospect in all of baseball.

NFL News

Another starting quarterback has bit the dust as Week 2 of the NFL season wrapped up last night.

The Los Angeles Rams thumped the New York Giants 28-6 after Giants’ starter Jaxon Dart left with a knee injury on the opening drive of the game. The NFL Network reports that Dart could undergo season-ending surgery after tests showed that his injury is more severe than expected.

Dart is the third prominent quarterback to suffer a serious injury in Week 2 along with Chicago’s Caleb Williams and Washington’s Jaden Daniels.

The Seahawks are expected to face backup Marcus Mariota when they travel to face the Commanders on Sunday.

Seattle also hosts the Bears on Nov. 2 and the Giants on Dec. 15.

Prep Basketball News

One of Whatcom County’s basketball programs is getting a change in leadership.

Sehome High School announced yesterday that Luke DuChesne is taking over as head coach of their boys basketball team. He returns to Sehome after spending three seasons as head coach of Ferndale’s boys team.

DuChesne started his coaching career with the Mariners, having spent time as a varsity assistant and JV coach.

He takes over for local coaching legend Brad Jackson, who is retiring after four years at Sehome. Before guiding the Mariners to a state tournament appearance in 2023, Jackson led Western Washington University to the 2012 men’s national championship.
