BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – More fish passage work is coming soon to a Bellingham road near you.
The City of Bellingham signed an updated memo of understanding with members of the Lummi Nation and the Nooksack Indian Tribe, as well as the state Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, last month. The new memo updates a 2022 agreement targeting fish passage barriers on city-owned property.
A study conducted last October found dozens of barriers that either fully or partially block fish passage across city limits. Priorities are being given to seven spots along Squalicum Creek, three that run over Whatcom Creek, and another 9 spots that currently block fish passage through Padden Creek. Some projects will require additional approval and cooperation from private property owners, BNSF and the Port of Bellingham.
Funding and timelines for barrier replacements have not yet been finalized and will be dependent on future grant awards.
