WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Active weather this weekend could bring some flood risk to northwest Washington this weekend, but our local rivers should be safe.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is expecting weak to moderate atmospheric river conditions to hit the region late Saturday, Jan. 9, through Monday night. Rain combined with mountain snow could result in increased runoff.

Forecasters warn that rivers originating from the central and northern Cascades will see sharp rises, with the potential for flooding.

The Nooksack and Skagit Rivers are currently both expected to remain just below the action stage, as of Friday night. Only rivers farther south in Snohomish County are forecast to breach the action stage, but NWS says it’s still monitoring the potential for river flooding.

Conditions are still expected to get dryer by the middle of next week.
