WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Historic flooding is on its last legs in Whatcom and Skagit counties.

Updated forecasts show that levels on the Nooksack and Skagit Rivers have both crested and are on the decline.

The Nooksack is currently well below the action stage in all parts of Whatcom County.

Meanwhile, the Skagit River is at the action stage near Concrete, where it’s expected to remain throughout the weekend.

Over in Mount Vernon, the river is forecast to fall below the minor flood level to the action stage by 4 p.m. today.

Still, a flood warning has been extended for the Skagit River near Mount Vernon until Friday morning.

Lower river levels have led to the reopening of Fir Island Road, which is the main arterial road for residents of Fir Island.

Skagit County Fire District 3 warns that other roads across the island are likely covered in debris and are urging drivers to use caution.
