Mariners News
The Mariners fell to the Minnesota Twins 10-1 this afternoon to end the series in a tie. The game was supposed to start this morning but got delayed for several hours due to heavy rain in Minneapolis.
Both teams were scoreless through four innings before Minnesota hit a two-run homer off Emerson Hancock in the fifth. The Twins blew the game open in the sixth inning when they exploded for eight runs off M’s reliever Zach Pop.
The Mariners finally got on the board when Miles Mastrobuoni scored Dominic Canzone off an RBI single in the ninth inning, but it was much too late.
They’re back tomorrow for the start of a three-game road series against their division rival Texas Rangers. Coverage begins at 4:00 and first pitch is at 5:15 tomorrow on KPUG with Logan Gilbert on the mound.
Hours before today’s game, the team announced that it placed first baseman Rowdy Tellez on release waivers. If no team takes him off waivers, the Mariners will be on the hook for the remainder of his $1.5 million salary and he would be free to sign with any other team for the league minimum.
Bells News
The Bells are playing a rubber match against the Wenatchee AppleSox after evening the series up last night. Bellingham put up its highest-scoring game of the season in a 15-2 romping of Wenatchee. Devyn Hernandez tossed six no-hit innings in the start to help end the Bells’ three-game skid.
Rob Jacobsen added two hits and 6 RBI to lead the charge on offense. Jacobsen has hit safety in all eight games he’s played with the Bells since joining the team earlier this month. Stanford commit and top-100 MLB draft prospect Brock Sell went 4-4 as well in the win.
The Bells brought their lead in the North Division back to 1.5 games over the AppleSox. They’ll look to close the series out with a win in tonight’s decisive Game 3.
First pitch is at 6:35 from Joe Martin Field. It’s the Bells’ last home game until the 4th of July.
Kraken News
The Kraken continued their busy offseason with another trade today. Seattle acquired forward Frederick Gaudreau from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for a fourth-round pick in this weekend’s draft.
Gaudreau had 18 goals and 19 assists while playing all 82 games last season for the Wild. The 32-year-old has three years left on his contract with an annual average value of just over $2 million.
The pick the Kraken traded is the 102nd overall.
They’re gearing up for the start of the draft tomorrow, where they own the eighth overall pick.
WSU Cougars News
A Coug cracked the lottery in the NBA Draft. Former Washington State standout Cedric Coward was taken with the 11th overall pick last night. The pick was originally owned by Portland, but the Memphis Grizzlies traded up to select Coward.
The 6-foot-5 forward shot up draft boards over the past few months despite playing just six games at Wazzu last season due to an injury, earning him “mystery man” status ahead of the draft. Scouts tout Coward’s lengthy wingspan and efficient shooting as major draws.
He started his college career at D-III Willamette before transferring to Eastern Washington and spending his final season in Pullman.
Youth Sports News
A local girls soccer team is heading to nationals. The Whatcom FC Rangers 2010 Gold Team won all five of their games at the Far West Regionals Presidents Cup in Boise earlier this month. That earned them a spot to compete against teams from across the country at the National Presidents Cup.
The tournament runs from July 11 through the 15 in Tampa, FL.
