Mariners News

The Mariners are looking to start fresh tonight after a disastrous end to their last series. Seattle lost to the Washington Nationals 9-3 in 10 innings last night. Leody Taveras and Ben Williamson each drove in runs in the seventh to tie the game and send it to extras. But the Nats exploded for seven runs off reliever Collin Snider in the 10th to secure the series win. It was a franchise record for runs in an extra inning for Washington.

The M’s have lost four of their last five games as their lead in the AL West has dwindled to just half a game. Bryan Woo will look to help them rebound for tonight’s series opener against the Minnesota Twins. Coverage begins at 6:00 and first pitch is at 7:10 on KPUG.

This weekend’s series at T-Mobile will feature the return of a key starter. Dan Wilson says Bryce Miller will take the mound tomorrow for Game 2 against the Twins. Miller has been out since May 11 with inflammation in his pitching elbow.

Meanwhile, Logan Gilbert took a big step in his return back to the rotation. The 2024 All-Star made his first rehab start with Triple-A Tacoma yesterday. Gilbert was expected to throw three innings, but needed 45 pitches to get through just 1 and ⅔ innings. He struck out three batters and gave up one run on two hits and two walks.

Gilbert is expected to make at least one more rehab start before returning to the rotation.

The Mariners still have yet to lose this season, entering tonight’s match with a 19-0-2 record.

Their game starts at 5:00 from Federal Way Memorial Field. If Sehome wins, they’ll play the winner of North Kitsap vs. Bainbridge in the championship tomorrow at 5:30 pm.

Kraken News

The Kraken have found their next head coach. Seattle hired Lane Lambert last night as its third coach in as many seasons. The 60-year-old Lambert was most recently a head coach for the New York Islanders from 2022 until he was fired in January 2024. He was 61-46-20 with the Islanders, and they qualified for the playoffs once during his tenure. He replaces Dan Bylsma, who was fired after one season.

Lambert will have his work cut out to improve a squad that finished seventh in the Pacific Division last season, but the future could be a bit brighter for the Kraken. The franchise has 10 picks across the first two rounds of the next three drafts.

NFL News

The Seahawks’ division rivals are beefing up their defensive line. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the San Francisco 49ers are finalizing a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for edge rusher Bryce Huff. Huff had his best season with the New York Jets in 2023 under new 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Salah. But Huff took a step back last year, dropping from 10 sacks to 2.5 in just six starts for Philly.

He’ll now join a 49ers squad that has undergone a defensive line makeover after releasing three starters earlier this offseason. The trade is expected to be finalized next week.
