Mariners News

Cal Raleigh could make Mariners history tonight as the M’s look for their 11th-straight win in Game 2 against Kansas City. The M’s thumped the Royals 12-5 last night thanks to three home runs from Dominic Canzone and two more from Raleigh.

Cal passed Mickey Mantle for the most single season home runs by a switch-hitter with his first homer, breaking a record that stood for over 60 years. With his second bomb, he tied Ken Griffey Jr. for the Mariners’ single-season home run record, as Big Dumper leads the majors with 56.

Logan Gilbert backed them up with just under six innings of two-run ball. Seattle’s still clinging to a half-game lead over the Houston Astros for first place in the AL West.

The M’s have a chance to extend their longest winning streak in over three years tonight with Bryce Miller taking the mound against the Royals.

Coverage begins at 3:30 and first pitch is at 4:40 on KPUG.

Storm News

The Storm made a furious comeback last night to keep their season alive. Seattle ended the game on a 16-4 run to beat the Las Vegas Aces 86-83 at Climate Pledge Arena in Game 2 of their opening round series.

That sets up a deciding Game 3 in Vegas tomorrow.

The Storm trailed by 12 with just seven minutes left in the game, but Skylar Diggins and Erica Wheeler went on to score a combined 19 points to propel the comeback win. Las Vegas had a chance to tie it at the buzzer but former Storm star Jewell Loyd’s 3-pointer hit off the right side of the rim.

Diggins finished with 26 points to lead all scorers and Nneka Ogwumike tacked on a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds. It was the Storm’s first playoff win since 2022 and snapped the Aces’ 17-game win streak.

Game 3 tips off at 6:30 tomorrow night from Las Vegas.

Sounders/Reign News

The Sounders fell short in a rematch of the Leagues Cup championship last night. Seattle lost to Lionel Messi and Inter Miami 3-1 in Florida.

It came weeks after the Sounders beat them to win the Leagues Cup tournament in late August. Messi had a goal and an assist to help Miami take revenge.

Obed Vargas scored Seattle’s lone goal of the game in the 69th minute.

The Sounders are back on Sunday when they travel to play Austin FC.

Meanwhile, the Reign got a win under unusual circumstances. Seattle beat Racing Louisville 1-0 last night to finish a match that was suspended on Sunday due to a medical emergency on the field.

Louisville midfielder Savannah DeMelo collapsed late in the first half and had to be taken off the field in an ambulance. She remains hospitalized in Seattle and is undergoing tests to determine why she collapsed. Players on both teams wore purple wristbands yesterday in DeMelo’s honor.

The Reign’s Jess Fishlock scored in the 90th minute to help Seattle get the delayed win. It snapped a five-game winless streak for the Reign, who hadn’t won since Aug. 1.

They’re back on Saturday for a road match against the Kansas City Current.

Local Sports News

Bellingham’s premier hockey team is hanging up its skates this year.

Bellingham Blazers coach Erick Rudd says the organization is suspending play for the upcoming season due to a lack of players. Rudd says the low numbers primarily come from the NCAA’s recent decision to make players from the Western Hockey League in Canada eligible for NCAA Division I hockey in 2025.

The Blazers mainly draw Division II or III players, but many of them won’t be able to play in college because of all the new Canadian players who are eligible in the NCAA, and are instead playing for their local club teams. Rudd says the Blazers are talking about options going forward and expect to make a decision on the team’s future by January 2026.

The Jr. Blazers will still return for another season.
