The Las Vegas Raiders are paying big bucks to reunite Pete Carroll with his former quarterback. ESPN reports that former Seahawk Geno Smith has agreed with the Raiders on a two-year, $75 million contract extension. The deal includes $66.5 million in guaranteed money and has incentives that could push the total to $85.5 million.
It comes weeks after Las Vegas traded a 2025 third-round pick to Seattle for Smith, who couldn’t agree on a contract with the Seahawks. The extension will now keep Smith in Las Vegas through the 2027 season. He still has one year and $31 million left on the previous contract he signed with Seattle.
Mariners News
The Mariners have the day off today before embarking on their first road trip of the season. Seattle’s coming off a series split to the Athletics and most recently, a 2-1 series loss to the Tigers. They currently own a 3-4 record, good for third in the AL West. Randy Arozarena has had the hot bat for the M’s, smashing two home runs and two doubles so far.
Meanwhile, Jorge Polanco is returning to the team after taking two games off for the birth of his child. His presence will be much-welcomed, as the third baseman leads the team with six hits in just four games played. Bryce Miller will look to lead the M’s when they travel down to the Bay Area for the start of a weekend series against the San Francisco Giants. Coverage for tomorrow’s series opener begins at 12:30 and first pitch is at 1:35 on KPUG.
Kraken News
The Kraken came out on top in a battle of regional NHL teams last night. Seattle shutout the Vancouver Canucks 5-0 to snap its three-game losing streak on the road. Joey Daccord made 25 saves for his second shutout of the season and fifth of his career. The Kraken were able to pile on offense in the absence of top forwards Jaden Schwartz and Eeli Tolvanen. Five different Kraken scored and Jared McCann added three assists in the win. The team will continue its final road trip of the season against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night.
High School Sports News
The state’s governing body for high school sports says it will be unable to enforce two potential rule changes limiting participation from transgender students. The Seattle Times reports that the WIAA has been told by the Attorney General’s office and other state agencies that its proposed amendments would violate state law.
The WIAA is considering two amendments surrounding transgender participation in high school sports. One proposed by the Lynden, Lynden Christian and Blaine school districts would limit participation in girls’ sports to students who were assigned female at birth. The other proposal by the Lynden school district would offer an athletic program outside of “boys and girls” that would be an open division for those who identify as transgender or nonbinary. The WIAA will vote on the proposed amendments starting on April 9, though they will only be considered for “advisory-only” votes and won’t be implemented.
One of Lynden’s basketball coaches has received a well-earned honor. Lions’ boys assistant coach Kent Victor is being inducted into the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Lions head coach Brian Roper says Victor has been instrumental in developing the team’s defense and teaching toughness to his players. The Lions are coming off a successful year that saw their girls’ team win state, girls’ coach Rob Adams win Coach of the Year for all classifications and boys’ senior Brant Heppner win 2A Player of the Year.
