Mariners News
The Mariners are looking to follow up on a wild win against the Astros. The M’s are hosting their division rivals in the second of their three game series tonight. It comes after Jorge Polanco’s 2-run single lifted Seattle over Houston 4-3 last night. Ryan Bliss hit a 2-run homer early on, but the Astros rallied back to take a two run lead into the bottom of the eighth. But Polanco continued his torrid hitting and hit a single up the middle to score Dylan Moore and Miles Mastrobuoni for the winning runs.
Logan Gilbert threw 5 and two-thirds innings of one-run ball to lead a staunch pitching performance for the Mariners, who allowed just two hits. Seattle snapped its three-game skid with the win. Luis Castillo and the M’s will look to keep it up tonight with a chance to overtake Houston for third place in the AL West. Coverage begins at 5:30 and first pitch is at 6:40 on KPUG.
Last night’s win was stunted by some rough injury news for Victor Robles. The team announced today that Robles has a small fracture in his left shoulder and will miss at least 12 weeks. But Robles could miss the entire season if he needs surgery. Mariners GM Justin Hollander says the team currently believes Robles does not need surgery, but will continue to monitor the injury. The M’s leadoff hitter was carted off the field on Sunday after he was injured while making a spectacular catch in their game against the Giants.
The Mariners have parted ways with one of their bullpen options from last year. Seattle dealt right-handed reliever Cody Bolton to the Cleveland Guardians today in exchange for cash considerations. Bolton spent the first two months of the 2024 season in the Mariners’ bullpen, where he had a 4.34 ERA in 17 games. He began this season with Triple-A Tacoma and was promptly sent down to Cleveland’s minor league affiliate after today’s trade.
College Basketball News
The Florida Gators are national champions. Florida rallied from a 12-point deficit to stun Houston 65-63 last night in the men’s college basketball title game. After being held silent in the first half, Gators star Walter Clayton Jr. scored 11 points in the second and made a key defensive stop in the final seconds of the game to earn Most Outstanding Player of the Final 4. Florida led for only 64 seconds in the game, but came out with their first national title since 2008.
Kraken News
The Kraken return tonight for the second match of their back-to-back. Seattle used a pair of early goals by Matty Beniers and Brandon Montour to edge the LA Kings 2-1 last night. Joey Daccord made 28 saves to help snap the Kings’ four game win streak. The Kraken will look to win their fourth straight tonight when they travel to face the Utah Hockey Club. Coverage begins at 5:30 and puck drops at 6:00 on KGMI.
