Mariners News
Mariners Opening Day is nearly upon us. The M’s begin their season at T-Mobile tomorrow night against the Athletics with Logan Gilbert on the mound. Seattle will look to rebound from a 2024 season where they missed the playoffs by a single game. Their stellar pitching core that paced the majors in quality starts last year has stayed completely intact. But manager Dan Wilson and a new hitting staff led by Mariners legend Edgar Martinez will have to improve on a lineup that hit for the second-lowest average in the league last season. Coverage for the Mariners’ season opener begins at 6:00 tomorrow and first pitch is at 7:05 on KGMI.
Today marks 25 years since an iconic sporting venue in Seattle was demolished. Crews set off a controlled implosion of the Kingdome on March 26, 2000. It came after the cost of repairing its aging ceiling reportedly cost more than the original construction of the stadium. The Kingdome hosted the Mariners and Seahawks and even some SuperSonics and Sounders games. Washington voters approved a referendum in 1998 to build Lumen Field adjacent to the stadium. The Kingdome’s memory still lives on in Seattle’s SoDo neighborhood, which was named for “south of the dome.”
NFL News
A former Super Bowl champion with the Seahawks is heading to the Big Apple. Russell Wilson signed with the New York Giants yesterday on a one-year deal worth up to $21 million. Wilson will return to MetLife Stadium, where he won Super Bowl 48 with Seattle in 2014. The Giants still have questions at quarterback though, as they own the third overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, which begins on April 24.
Kraken News
The Kraken lost their third straight game in an overtime thriller last night. Nazem Kadri scored his second goal of the game in overtime to give the Calgary Flames a 4-3 victory over Seattle. Jaden Schwartz had a power-play goal and an assist for the Kraken, and Jordan Eberle and Tye Kartye also scored. They now head back to Climate Pledge for their penultimate home stretch of the season, starting with the Edmonton Oilers tomorrow night.
WWU Vikings News
Western Washington University’s softball team kept up their strong play this afternoon. The Vikings beat Dominican 11-4 in the middle game of their spring break trip to California. They’ve rebounded from a slow start to win seven of their last eight, including three blowouts that were cut short after five innings. Infielder Maleah Andrews has had a successful sophomore season for the 12th nationally ranked Viks, leading them with a .522 average. Western currently leads the GNAC standings with a 20-8 overall record, 6-2 against conference opponents. They’ll look to keep it up tomorrow afternoon against Menlo College in their last stretch of non-league games.
