The Seahawks’ division rivals are paying big bucks to keep their starting quarterback. ESPN reports the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a 5-year, $265 million contract extension with Brock Purdy.
It’s a massive pay raise for Purdy, known as “Mr. Irrelevant” for being the last pick in the 2022 NFL draft. The Seahawks open the regular season at home against the Niners on Sept. 7.

The Mariners are back in San Diego tonight for the start of a three-game series against the Padres. The series marks the first installment of the Vedder Cup between the two clubs. The winner of the season series between Seattle and San Diego will take home the Vedder Cup Trophy, designed by Eddie Vedder himself.
The M’s will look to shake off their struggles after losing six of their last seven games. They’re still clinging to a half-game lead over the Rangers for first place in the AL West. Logan Evans is on the mound for tonight’s opener. Coverage begins at 5:30 and first pitch is at 6:40 on KPUG.

The Storm tip off their season tomorrow night in the WNBA. They’re on the road against the Phoenix Mercury. The team has plenty of new faces after parting ways with All-Star Jewell Loyd and taking French sensation Dominique Malonga second overall in the draft. Tomorrow night’s game tips off at 7:00.
Speaking of the WNBA, a local author is hosting an event tomorrow to coincide with the start of the season. Squalicum tennis coach Meri-Jo Borzilleri will be signing copies of her new book “Who Is Caitlin Clark?” tomorrow during the “Hoopla” event at Squalicum High School. Coaches and players from WWU’s women’s basketball team will be on hand to teach clinics. It will also feature a 3v3 tournament, three-point shoot-out, HORSE competition and much more.
Admission is $10 for individuals or $20 for teams and includes participation in all the events and a signed copy of the book. All proceeds will support Squalicum’s girl’s tennis team. It runs from 1-4 pm at Squalicum HS gym. Click here to register.

WWU’s softball team is heading to the College World Series. The Viks made an improbable comeback, losing the first match of their three-game series against Cal State San Marcos yesterday, but rallying for a 4-1 win this morning. Western went on to edge them out in the deciding game thanks to a go-ahead 3-run homer by Olivia Matlock. The team now heads to Chatanooga, TN for the national championships starting Thursday, May 22.
A golfer with Western Washington University made history at nationals yesterday. Junior Lauren F. Lee tied for 4th place in the NCAA D-II Women’s Golf Championship, the best-ever finish at nationals for the program.
Lee finished at 8-under-par 208 to set a 54-hole tournament record for Western. She was the first Viking to qualify for the national championship as an individual in 15 years.

Anacortes edged Bellingham 5-4 last night in the 2A district baseball championship. Sehome’s season came to a close in a 5-0 loss to Archbishop Murphy. The Bayhawks will now take on Archbishop at 1 pm tomorrow in Anacortes with a spot in the state tournament on the line. Meanwhile, Lynden Christian is playing Meridian tomorrow, with the winner booking a spot at state as well. That game starts at 1 pm from Joe Martin Stadium.
In fastpitch softball, Lynden is taking on Burlington-Edison tomorrow in the 2A district championship. First pitch is at 11 am from Sehome High School. Sehome is playing Anacortes today in the 2A consolation bracket. The Mariners need three straight wins today and tomorrow to secure a spot at state. Lynden Christian booked its ticket to state last night with a 13-3 win over La Center in the 1A bi-district consolation bracket.
Wrapping up with boys soccer, Lynden had its season come to a close in a 2-1 defeat to Archbishop Murphy last night. Archbishop plays Squalicum at Civic Stadium at 1 pm tomorrow for a spot in the state tournament. Meanwhile, Blaine plays Bush and Meridian plays King’s in the bi-district tournament at King’s High School tomorrow, both for a spot at state.
