Seahawks News
The Seahawks are reuniting with a former Pro Bowler to add depth to their secondary. ESPN reports the team is bringing back veteran cornerback Shaquill Griffin on a one-year, $3 million contract.
Seattle picked Griffin in the third-round of the 2017 draft and he spent four seasons with the team, making the Pro Bowl in 2019. The 29-year-old played all 17 games for the Minnesota Vikings last season while starting in three.
He’s expected to compete with Josh Jobe for the No. 3 corner spot behind Devon Witherspoon and Riq Woolen.
Mariners News
The Mariners have a chance to clinch their series in Minnesota tonight. They’re playing the Twins with a chance to pick up their fourth-straight win.
Julio Rodriguez hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the ninth inning of last night’s game to give the M’s a 6-5 win. They started off strong with a five-run third inning, but the Twins quickly tied it back up. Julio went on to drive in the winning run after the Twins hit a pair of batters with pitches.
Matt Brash finished the game off with a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his first save since 2023. Cal Raleigh, Donovan Solano and Cole Young all had two hits to help hand the Twins their fifth-straight loss.
The M’s have won 8 of their last 11 games and have put up nearly 10 runs a game over their last five. They’ll look to keep it up tonight in the third of their four-game series against the Twins.
Coverage begins at 3:30 and first pitch is at 4:40 on KPUG with George Kirby on the mound.
Meanwhile, Diego Segui, the first player to throw a pitch for the Mariners, has died at the age of 87. The president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum announced the news on social media last night.
Segui pitched one year for the Mariners in their inaugural season in 1977. It was the last of his 15 total seasons in the big leagues. He didn’t only throw for the Mariners, but also their predecessor, the Seattle Pilots, in the first-ever regular season game for them as well.
Bells News
The Bells couldn’t muster up as much offense last night. They fell to the Wenatchee AppleSox 8-3 for their third straight loss.
The Sox scored two runs in the first and never relinquished their lead, tallying 13 hits in the win. It was the most runs the Bells had given up in nearly two weeks.
With the loss, the Bells’ lead atop the North Division has been trimmed to just half a game over the AppleSox. They’ll look to maintain their status as leaders of the North in Game 2 tonight. First pitch is at 6:35 from Joe Martin Field.
Storm News
The Storm had their win streak come to an end at the hands of Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever. Seattle fell to Indiana 94-86 last night to snap its three-game win streak.
Seattle sports legends like Sue Bird, Megan Rapinoe, Isaiah Thomas and Lenny Wilkens were all in attendance for Clark’s first game of the season at Climate Pledge. Clark struggled, finishing with a season-low 6 points on 0-6 shooting from 3, but her teammate Aliyah Boston posted a career-high 31 points in the win.
Skylar Diggins led the Storm with 22 points and 6 assists. They’ll look to rebound on Friday night when they host the league-worst Connecticut Sun.
WSU Cougars News
A former Coug is hoping to get his name called in tonight’s NBA Draft. Washington State’s Cedric Coward is the 21st-ranked prospect in ESPN’s draft rankings, though some mocks have him going as high as the top 10.
Coward began his college career at D-III Willamette before transferring to Eastern Washington and landing in Pullman for his senior year. He averaged nearly 18 points per game on impressive efficiency for the Cougs last season. Scouts note his size as a 6-foot-6 wing who can score at all three levels.
If he gets his name called, he’d be the fifth former Coug in the NBA. Tonight’s draft begins at 5:00.
