Seahawks News
The Seahawks left the first day of the NFL draft with new help in the trenches. Seattle chose North Dakota State offensive guard Grey Zabel with the 18th overall pick yesterday.
The 6-foot-6, 312 pound Zabel played at every position on the offensive line except center during his five seasons at NDSU. He says he received six-figure offers to transfer to Power Four schools ahead of his final season, but instead stayed put and was an FCS All-American at left tackle last year. The 23-year-old will look to improve an offensive line unit that gave up the third-most sacks in the league last season.
There was plenty more action in Round One yesterday. Former Washington State University standout Cam Ward went first overall to the Tennessee Titans. The Raiders took Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty with the sixth pick. He’ll join former Seahawks Pete Carroll and Geno Smith in Las Vegas. Former Steilacoom High School star and Ohio State receiver Emeka Egbuka went 19th overall to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And former Rainier Beach High School standout Josh Conerly Jr. went 29th to the Washington Commanders after playing offensive tackle for Oregon.
The Seahawks have their hands full in Day Two of the draft tonight. Seattle owns the 18th and 20th picks in the second round and the 18th and 28th picks in the third. Coverage for Round Two begins at 3:00 on KPUG.

The Mariners are back home after a successful road trip out East. Seattle’s hosting the Miami Marlins this weekend with a chance to win their sixth-straight series. The M’s are coming off a series win over the Red Sox, their first at Fenway Park since 2014.
JP Crawford rebounded from a slow start to the season to get a team-high six hits throughout the series. Rookie third baseman Ben Williamson kept up his solid hitting with five hits himself after recently getting called up from Triple-A Tacoma. Cal Raleigh has cooled off a bit from his torrid streak last week, but still leads the majors in home runs with nine.
The Mariners are currently tied with the Rangers for first place in the AL West, but could take sole possession today with ace Logan Gilbert taking the mound against Miami. Coverage begins at 5:30 and first pitch is at 6:40 on KGMI.
Sounders/Reign News
Seattle soccer clubs are hitting the road this weekend. The Sounders are facing Colorado Rapids at 6:30 tomorrow night. And the Reign are taking on Bay FC at 7. Both teams will look to continue their success from shutout wins in their last matches.
Fishing News
It’s nearly fishing season here in Whatcom County. Tomorrow is the official opening day for fishing at lowland lakes around the state. Each year, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife stocks lakes with millions of rainbow, cutthroat and the occasional tiger trout.
It’s also the 10th year of the annual Fish and Wildlife Trout Derby, which features over $50,000 in prizes. Trout in participating derby lakes are tagged with an orange tag near the dorsal fin. Bellingham’s Lake Padden is the only derby lake in the county.
