The Mariners are looking to rebound from a rough showing in Game 2 against Houston tonight. The Astros spoiled George Kirby’s season debut yesterday and beat the M’s 9-2 in their series opener. Seattle went off to an early 2-0 lead, but Jose Altuve hit two home runs and the Astros scored nine unanswered runs to get the key divisional win. George Kirby gave up five runs in three-and-two-thirds innings pitched in his first major league game after being placed on the injured list in March.

Absent from the game was star Julio Rodriguez, who was a late scratch with back tightness, though he is back in the lineup for today’s game. Also of concern was Bryan Woo, who limped to the clubhouse after being hit by a foul ball in yesterday’s game. But manager Dan Wilson says he’s still on for his scheduled start tomorrow.

In the meantime, Emerson Hancock is on the mound tonight as the Mariners look to fight off the Astros from closing in on their 2.5-game lead in the AL West. Coverage begins at 4:00 and first pitch is at 5:10 on KPUG.

Western’s softball team is fighting for its season tomorrow morning in the College World Series. The 8th-seeded Vikings are playing 4th-seeded North Georgia in a loser-out match.

Western’s coming off a tight loss to the tournament’s #1 overall seed and defending champion UT Tyler. All-American third baseman Maleah Andrews picked up a hit to extend her school-record on-base streak to 54 consecutive games.

If the Viks win tomorrow, they’ll face Central Oklahoma later in the day in another loser-out match. First pitch for tomorrow’s game against North Georgia is at 8 am local time from Chattanooga, TN. You can find a link to stream it for free at NCAA.com.

Plenty of state tournament action going on this weekend. Sehome’s boys soccer team is hosting Cedarcrest tomorrow afternoon in the 2A quarterfinals. The match starts at 1:00 from Civic Stadium.

Across the state, Lynden Christian is playing Cashmere tomorrow in the opening round of the 1A state baseball tournament. The 11th-seeded Lyncs will look to upset the 6th-seeded Bulldogs. First pitch is at 10 am from Camas High School.

In fastpitch softball, Lynden throttled Franklin Pierce 15-1 this morning to advance to the 2A quarterfinals. There, they’re facing top-seeded Tumwater in a match that will send the winner to the semis and loser to the consolation bracket. That game is already underway from Carlon Park in Selah.

Over in the 1A softball tournament, Lynden Christian beat Kiona-Benton 14-5 yesterday to move on to the quarterfinals. But they lost to top-seeded Montesano 8-0 this afternoon to fall into the consolation bracket. The Lyncs will face an undetermined opponent at 7:00 tonight in Richland.

Ski to Sea News

Whatcom County’s marquee sporting event is this Sunday.  The 2025 Ski to Sea race kicks off at 7:30 am up at the Mount Baker Ski area.  Relay teams will make their way from the mountain to Bellingham Bay via cross country ski, downhill ski, running, road bike, canoe, cyclocross and sea kayak. 

This year’s race will feature over 500 teams from around the world.  The team from Birch Equipment is looking to win their fourth race in a row.
