Northwest Straits Foundation receives $3 million to protect Whatcom County shorelines

In total, nearly 6.5 miles of shoreline and streams will be more accessible for salmon by the project's completion later this summer.

WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Funds from Washington state’s Climate Commitment Act are being reinvested to protect the shorelines of Whatcom County.

Washington’s Recreation and Conservation Office announced that over $3 million has been awarded to the Northwest Straits Foundation (NSF).

They’ve been working to reduce barriers for spawning salmon along seven county coastlines, including Whatcom and Skagit, since 2019. Specifically, NSF is aiming to replace seawalls and boulders that inhibit natural shoreline erosion.

Funding from the Climate Commitment Act will go towards any sort of technical help that property owners may need to find the best solution for their shores.
