BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – It is not as bad as 2015 yet, but snow levels in Washington’s high country are low enough to cause concern.
It could even impact one of Whatcom County’s premier events.
The National Weather Service says the current snowpack in the North Cascades is just 50 percent of normal.
It is even worse in the Olympics where there is just 32 percent of the usual amount of snow on the ground at this time of year.
The snowpack is well below normal in every region in Washington, which bodes poorly for river and stream flows and water supplies during the dry summer months.
Event organizers including Ski To Sea are also taking note of the situation.
A lack of snow forced them to create different legs for the relay race to replace the ski and snowboard events in 2015.
They will discuss contingency plans at a meeting in early March in case enough snow does not materialize before Memorial Weekend.
But they, and water experts around the state, are keeping their fingers crossed that the weather will turn more wintery in coming weeks.
