WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Millions of dollars are coming to Whatcom County to improve outdoor recreation throughout the state.

The Washington State Recreation and Conservation Funding Board has announced that more than $148 million has been awarded to hundreds of projects.

Whatcom County will receive over $2 million of that money, which will be allocated towards at least 14 projects.

Grants will be allocated towards creating safety materials for mountain bikers at Galbraith, supporting the Lynden Shotgun club, maintaining county trails, preserving land and developing a park in Birch Bay.

Some grants work to improve cross-county areas such as motorcycle trails and the Pacific Northwest Trail.

Megan Duffy, director of the Recreation and Conservation Office, says these grants are key to building great communities.

“These grants are critical to keeping Washington a premier destination for outdoor adventure as well as a great place for Washingtonians to live,” said Duffy. “These grants are key to building great communities. The grants help communities light ball fields, make parks accessible to people with disabilities, connect gaps in trail systems, refurbish pools and resurface pickleball courts.”

In all, nearly 60% of all grant applicants in the state received funding according to the office.
