MOUNT VERNON, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Two parents were arrested in Mount Vernon after a child was found dead with drugs in their system.

The Mount Vernon Police Department says officers responded to a report of an unconscious 2-year-old child at a home on N 21st Street on Sept. 16.

Despite attempts to save the child, they were pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators found evidence of drug use inside the home and preliminary tests showed drugs present in the child. The final cause and manner of death along with final toxicology results are still pending.

The department obtained arrest warrants for the child’s parents on Oct. 2 and they were taken into custody by a SWAT team on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

The 37-year-old man and 40-year-old woman are facing first-degree manslaughter, violation of the uniform controlled substances act and reckless endangerment charges.
