LUMMI NATION, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The Lummi Nation community celebrated its boys and girls basketball teams during a championship parade and celebration ceremony on Friday, March 13.
The Blackhawks boys repeated as state 1B champions in Spokane the previous weekend, beating Tulalip Heritage 61-56. The Lady Blackhawks added a 54-45 win over Pateros to secure a 4th place finish at state, their highest placing since 2009.
Both teams feature strong family ties. The boys team is coached by Jerome Toby and features his son Jerome at point guard. The two Tobys were honored with 1B State Coach of the Year and Player of the Year for their impressive season.
Meanwhile, the girls team features coach David James and his daughter, Jemma. She earned Northwest 1B League Player of the Year for the strong junior season she put together.
