BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A Bellingham man is in custody after police say he caused two people to jump out of a second-story window during an attempted burglary.

Bellingham Police Lt. Claudia Murphy said officers were called to a report of a residential burglary on S Forest Street on the early morning of Sunday, July 12.

Investigators say a 45-year-old man had threatened to kill the two people inside an apartment if they didn’t let him in.

He continued to kick the door down and made it to the kitchen before leaving and trying to force his way into a neighboring unit.

Police say he kicked the door and yelled the name of someone who didn’t live there as well as threatening the occupants. This prompted the two people inside the second apartment to jump from a second-story window.

Investigators say neither household knew the suspect. One person suffered a minor injury after jumping out of the window.

BPD officers arrested the man near the apartment building and he remains at the Whatcom County Jail on $50,000 bail.
