OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The Parent’s Bill of Rights and transgender students in sports are the subject of two initiatives being proposed to the state Legislature.
Political action committee Let’s Go Washington says it’s beginning to collect signatures on a pair of new initiatives.
The first seeks to overturn changes made in the state’s last legislative session to the access that parents have to their student’s records.
Under the new rules, students’ information about medical records and counseling information is confidential from parents.
The other aims to bar students who were assigned male at birth from participating in female sports.
The organization previously backed all four initiatives in last November’s general election, one of which that passed, and had three more that were approved by the state Legislature.
Although Let’s Go Washington has been labeled as a conservative-leaning group, founder Brian Heywood says that he believes both new initiatives will have bipartisan support behind them.
“There are those 80/20 issues, they’re not some sort of Republican MAGA thing, there’s really strong support across a broad spectrum of people,” Heywood told My Bellingham Now. “And that’s I think why the legislature passed them last time, is they could see the support that was out there.”
The two initiatives will be sent to the state legislature if they gather enough signatures by the end of the year and lawmakers can decide to pass them or send them to the voters next fall.
