OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A proposed bill heading before the state legislature could institute new qualifications for those considering careers in law enforcement.
HB 2641 was introduced on Thursday, Jan. 22 by Democrat state Reps. Tarra Simmons and Shaun Scott.
The bill would prohibit anyone hired by ICE after Jan. 20, 2025, from obtaining employment with any law enforcement agency in Washington state.
If approved by the legislature, the bill would be effective as of Oct. 1.
Similar bills targeting federal immigration and customs enforcement have also been introduced this session.
My Bellingham Now previously reported on SB 5855’s introduction, which would ban face coverings for any member of law enforcement serving in Washington.
