WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A pair of public hearings are on the docket for Whatcom County.

Whatcom County Council members will hold the hearings at their regular meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

The first issue tackles eminent domain land usage ahead of a planned roundabout project at the intersection of Birch Bay Lynden Road and Blaine Road.

Public works officials told the council in June that they’ve been struggling to contact a gas station owner whose property would be impacted by the roundabout’s construction. If the ordinance passes beyond the public hearing, the county council can begin to pursue legal action to reclaim about 2,500 square feet of land.

The second public hearing will focus on how a state Community Development Block Grant should be spent. Both the county and the Opportunity Council received $130,000 from the grant last year, and could utilize up to $133,000 for use in 2026.

Public hearings will begin after the meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the council chambers.
