BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Road crews are taking advantage of relatively dry weather to complete several road projects around Whatcom County.
Downtown Bellingham
The City of Bellingham says that signs of minor erosion were discovered on the base of the Roeder Ave Bridge during a recent inspection. Crews will begin repair work on the bridge Monday, Oct. 19, leaving the sidewalk open but merging bike traffic with other vehicles.
The traffic switch will remain in place until work is completed around Oct. 30. City officials add that the erosion was likely caused by natural tidal changes in the Whatcom Waterway.
I-5 near Alger
WSDOT crews will close the northbound I-5 on and off ramps at the Alger/Lake Samish exit, as well as the right lane of the freeway near the exit. The overnight closures are scheduled between 8pm and 5am, starting Tuesday, Oct. 20 and ending Thursday, Oct. 22. Crews will be installing rumble strips and painting new lane markings during that time.
Additional lane reductions have been planned around those closure times.
The left lane will be closed both north and southbound on I-5 through the same area overnight starting on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 8pm. Overnight left lane closures will continue Monday, Oct. 19 into Tuesday morning Oct. 20, and will resume Thursday, Oct. 22 through 5am Friday, Oct. 23.
Mount Baker Highway
WSDOT says that crews will be working on a ten-mile stretch of the road from Artist Point to the Silver Fir Campground starting on Monday, Oct. 19. Traffic may be held in either direction for up to five minutes at a time between 7am and 4pm Monday through Friday, Oct. 23.
No closure date has been announced for the 2.7 mile stretch of the Mount Baker Highway leading up to Artist Point. Last year, My Bellingham Now reported the seasonal closure began on October 15.
