BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Over the last several years, downtown Bellingham has seen a steady increase in the popularity of community-geared events. Vendor markets, block takeovers and immersive festivals are all on the rise.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Downtown Bellingham Partnership broke the downtown area of Bellingham into different districts, sparking the implementation of unified events between businesses – like the reoccurring Commercial Street Block Party. Now, District 4 businesses are teaming up on Aug. 18 from 12:00 to 7:00 p.m. to host a block party on Railroad Avenue in downtown Bellingham.

Rockin’ the Railroad is hosted by Allied Arts, who are working with WTA, the city of Bellingham and businesses like Bella Ciao, Nacho Problems and Ritual Records to bring the downtown community together. Though Allied Arts has put on a wide range of events, Executive Director Kelly Hart says that the range of businesses involved in this day make it incredibly unique. Hart describes it as a celebration of community, sustainable transportation, local arts and culture.

“We picked a Sunday afternoon because it tends to be quiet downtown on Sundays. We wanted to get the neighbors out to know each other and interact,” Hart said. “It’s been a really collaborative project with all of the different businesses downtown.”

The event is geared toward a wide variety of ages and individuals. The city of Bellingham and WTA are running several “smart trip” biking and pedestrian related activities.

Red Sparrow Tattoo Collective will be giving out real and temporary tattoos and The Ruckus Room will bring arcade games for people to play. A beer garden hosted by Bella Ciao and Nacho Problems will be accompanied by live music from Ritual Records. On the other side of the street, those attending can explore face painting, art classes and booths from nonprofits and vendors.

The block party will be happening along 1400 Railroad Ave., and businesses like The Bagelry and Avenue Bread will be extending their hours to cater to attendees. Parking and entry will be free that day.
