BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A sewage spill has forced the temporary closure of a popular Bellingham beach.
Public Works spokesperson Riley Grant says the spill occurred near Bloedel Donovan Park while crews were working on the Electric Avenue bridge in the afternoon on Sept. 11.
A contractor was driving piles into Lake Whatcom and accidentally hit an underground sewer line. The crew’s technology indicated the line was located in a different position, leading to the unexpected rupture.
Grant estimates that 25,000 to 50,000 gallons of raw sewage was discharged into the lake before the spill was diverted to another line.
The sewage that spilled has since been diluted through dam flows down Whatcom Creek. Public Works adds that drinking water quality has not been impacted by the spill.
Though Bloedel Donovan beach remains closed until further notice, the boat launch is open. Those looking to get out on the water are still asked to avoid contact with the water if possible.
