BELLINGHAM, WA – (MyBellinghamNow.com) The Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office (SMFO) wants to remind everyone to install and test fire alarms in the home. They say that about 90% of reported fire deaths in 2022 were where smoke alarms should have been installed.

Here are some tips the SMFO shared about smoke alarm recommendations:

Smoke alarms work best for protection when they are interconnected, either hardwired or on a wireless system. These alarms should be in every sleeping room and at least one on every level of the residence.

There are two different types of alarms: ionization and photoelectric. Photoelectric alarms are recommended as they detect smoldering fires rather than flaming fires. A smoldering fire is what usually occurs before a full flame develops, and the earlier the detection, the better.

Smoke alarms should be tested at least once a month and replaced after up to 10 years or based on the manufacturer’s recommendation.

Rental properties are required to comply with these regulations, and if the unit does not comply, renters should contact their landlord to add or fix the smoke alarms.
