BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Construction work will briefly close part of a popular Bellingham trail.

Bellingham Parks and Recreation says that the South Bay trail connection to Boulevard Park will be closed at the north railroad crossing for up to a week starting Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Pedestrian gates are being installed to keep people safe as they leave the park towards downtown Bellingham.

It’s also part of the city’s efforts to turn that area into a designated Quiet Zone, where trains are not required to sound their horns before a crossing. Safety upgrades are part of the criteria that needs to be met before the Quiet Zone can be established.

The city is in the process of creating two larger Quiet Zone districts within Fairhaven and downtown Bellingham.
